Is upgrading from a Ryzen 9 9900X to a 9800X3D worth $180 for 4K gaming?

I currently use a Ryzen 9 9900X paired with an RX 9070 XT. I have the opportunity to swap the CPU for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D by paying about $180, but this system is used exclusively for gaming.
I play at 4K with High settings, so the 9070 XT is usually near full utilization. Most CPU comparisons use much faster graphics cards at 1080p to expose CPU differences, which makes me wonder how relevant those results are to my setup.
Would the 9800X3D provide noticeably better 1% lows, frame pacing, or consistency at 4K, or would I mostly be paying $180 for only a couple of extra average FPS?

The main advantage would be consistency rather than a higher FPS number. CPU-heavy games, large multiplayer games, and competitive titles can benefit from better 1% and 0.1% lows even at 4K. That said, it is not an urgent upgrade—try to identify an actual bottleneck or stuttering problem before spending the $180.

Before replacing the CPU, check GPU utilization, per-core CPU usage, frametime graphs, memory settings, and whether background processes are causing spikes. You can also tune memory and the 9900X slightly. Synthetic benchmark differences at 1080p do not automatically translate into a noticeable improvement in a 4K gaming setup.

A comparison using a high-end graphics card found only a small average-FPS difference between these CPUs at 4K. With a slower 9070 XT, the gap should generally be even smaller because the GPU becomes the bottleneck sooner. You might see improvements in a few CPU-limited games, but not a transformative change across your library.

There are exceptions. Games such as Rust, Counter-Strike, Fortnite, simulation titles, or poorly optimized open-world games can remain CPU-limited at 4K, especially with high-refresh-rate targets or upscaling enabled. In those cases, the 9800X3D could be worthwhile, but the answer depends heavily on the games you actually play.
VividMango5: Exactly. If the current CPU is already delivering a stable experience, the upgrade is hard to justify. If you are seeing frequent dips in a CPU-heavy game, then the smoother lows could be worth the premium.

At 4K, your 9070 XT will be the limiting factor in most games, so average FPS should barely change. The X3D chip may improve 1% lows and reduce occasional frame-time spikes, but that is only really valuable if you are currently experiencing stutter or noticeable drops. If the system already feels smooth, keeping the 9900X and saving the money for a future GPU upgrade makes more sense.
