My AM4 system has become increasingly unstable, and I'm considering upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D. The current motherboard is an older, very budget-oriented ASRock AB350 K4 from 2018. I'm concerned about whether its VRMs can handle the 5800X3D, whether its PCIe generation could limit a newer graphics card such as an RX 9070 XT or 9070 GRE, and the fact that it lacks support for some USB headers on my cases. B550 boards with Wi-Fi and an ATX layout cost roughly $150 where I live. DDR5 is currently extremely expensive locally, so moving to AM5 would cost much more than staying with AM4. Are these good reasons to replace the motherboard, or would keeping the AB350 be perfectly adequate?

You don’t need an especially powerful VRM for a 5800X3D. A decent B550 board with around an 8-phase VRM is already plenty, and many affordable models have stronger power delivery than that. Look for a board with the features you actually need and compare prices below your local $150 ceiling. You could also sell the AB350 afterward, since it may still be useful to someone building an inexpensive AM4 system.
If the AB350 has a BIOS that supports the 5800X3D, it may be able to run it, but check the exact BIOS requirements and motherboard support list first. PCIe 3.0 x16 usually won’t meaningfully hold back a modern graphics card, though the older board could still be worth replacing if you need the additional USB headers, Wi-Fi, better storage connectivity, or more reliable firmware. Since AM5 memory is unusually expensive for you, a B550 upgrade is a reasonable way to extend the life of the system rather than paying for a full platform change.

AM5 isn’t attractive here because 32 GB of DDR5 costs more than the 5800X3D and a replacement motherboard combined. That makes a reasonably priced B550 board the much better-value option for now.
