Is upgrading from an i5-10400 to an i7-14700F worth keeping my DDR4 RAM?

I'm considering replacing my i5-10400, which I bought in 2021, with an i7-14700F. I already have 32GB of DDR4 memory, so moving to a compatible DDR4 motherboard would let me keep that RAM while avoiding the extra cost of a DDR5 upgrade. I've heard Ryzen can be better for gaming, but I'm mainly looking for a balance between gaming and general work. I'm starting out in data analytics, though I don't expect my workloads to be especially CPU-heavy yet. I'm not too concerned about long-term platform upgrades; the i5-10400 lasted me several years, and I'll probably replace the whole system when I upgrade again. Would the i7-14700F be a sensible choice, or would another CPU—or simply waiting—make more sense?

The i7-14700F is powerful, but it may be more CPU than you need, especially if your work is mostly light data analytics. A 14600K or 14600KF could offer a better balance, provided you choose a motherboard with strong VRMs and adequate cooling. Make sure you buy the DDR4 version of the board if you want to reuse your existing memory.

Because you already own 32GB of DDR4, upgrading to a DDR4-compatible board and CPU isn’t unreasonable while memory prices are high. However, don’t ignore the full platform cost: you’ll need a new motherboard, and the 14700F also needs a capable cooler. If your current i5 isn’t holding back the games or applications you use, waiting for a better deal may be the smarter move.

Before upgrading, check whether you’re actually CPU-limited. If your games are running into a GPU limit, a graphics card upgrade or a higher-resolution display may improve the experience more than replacing the processor. An older i7 upgrade on your current platform could be considered if it’s extremely cheap, but it probably won’t provide the same jump as moving to a newer platform.

If you want to keep DDR4, moving to an AM4 system is another option. A Ryzen 7 5800X3D can be an excellent gaming upgrade, although it generally won’t match the 14700F in heavily multithreaded workloads. For gaming and lighter productivity, it could still be a good value if the CPU and motherboard are reasonably priced.
MellowCactus42: The computer is for both gaming and work, but my current data-analysis tasks probably won’t be demanding enough to justify choosing a CPU specifically for heavy professional workloads.
