I'm considering upgrading my i5-12400F to an i5-14600K and would like to know whether the difference is worthwhile for competitive games such as Valorant and Counter-Strike 2. I'm using an RTX 4060, 16GB of DDR4 memory, and a 240Hz monitor, so my goal is to maintain around 240 FPS with low settings. Is the 14600K a good choice, and are there any motherboard, BIOS, or cooling concerns I should know about?

Before buying, consider whether your motherboard and cooler are suitable. Fourteenth-generation Intel chips require a compatible BIOS, and it’s best to use the latest stable BIOS with Intel’s recommended power settings. The 14600K can draw considerably more power than the 12400F, so cooling and motherboard power limits matter. If you want to avoid those extra considerations, a newer platform may offer a cleaner long-term upgrade, but switching platforms also means replacing the motherboard and possibly the memory.
The 14600K should be a solid upgrade, especially for improving minimum FPS and reducing CPU limits in competitive games. Your RTX 4060 is a good pairing, though the processor has more performance headroom than the GPU needs for most games. Make sure your motherboard supports it with an updated BIOS, and use a capable dual-tower air cooler or better. A cheap LGA1700 contact frame can also help improve mounting pressure and temperatures.
Check your current GPU usage before upgrading. If Valorant is only using around 30–40% GPU and Counter-Strike 2 is around 60% with your settings reduced, you’re already CPU-limited in those games. The 14600K should provide more headroom for high refresh-rate gaming, but the exact FPS will still depend on the map, settings, memory speed, and frame-time consistency.

A 14600K or 14600KF paired with an RTX 4060 is a perfectly capable combination.
