I currently have a Z790 motherboard paired with an i5-12400F. I bought the board partly so I could upgrade the processor later without replacing the motherboard. I now have enough money for a CPU upgrade, but not for another motherboard. I've seen concerns that the i7-14700K runs hot and that this generation has reliability problems. I mainly use the computer for gaming, editing, and streaming. Is the 14700K still a worthwhile upgrade?

The main thing to plan for is cooling and power consumption. The 14700K can run hot under heavy workloads, so make sure your cooler and motherboard settings are appropriate. Whether it is worth the money ultimately depends on how much you use editing and streaming versus gaming alone.
Before installing it, update the motherboard BIOS while the 12400F is still installed. Also, buy a new retail CPU rather than a used or refurbished one. With the correct BIOS and adequate cooling, it should be a reasonable upgrade.
