Is upgrading from an i5-8600K to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D worth it?

I'm looking to upgrade my PC, but current RAM prices are making me hesitant. I have an RTX 4070 12GB and want a processor that offers a significant improvement over my i5-8600K while letting me stay on DDR4. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D seems like the strongest DDR4 option, but I would need a new motherboard and would like to know whether it makes sense compared with alternatives such as Intel's 14th-generation chips or moving to AM5.

Also compare the Ryzen 7 5700X3D. It’s usually cheaper while offering very similar gaming performance, making it one of the best value upgrades for a DDR4 system. Intel’s i5-14600K or 14600KF with a B760 DDR4 motherboard is another strong option and can be faster overall, so compare the total cost of the CPU, board, and cooler rather than looking at the processor price alone.

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is a major upgrade and works with DDR4, but remember that it uses the AM4 socket. You’ll need an AM4 motherboard, compatible RAM, and a decent aftermarket cooler because the chip doesn’t include one. Check the motherboard’s CPU support list and BIOS requirements before buying; some older boards need an update, ideally through BIOS Flashback. Since you already have an RTX 4070, the upgrade will be most noticeable in CPU-limited games, so checking CPU usage in the games you play is a good idea first.

I tried Elden Ring and my CPU was almost constantly at 100%, so it definitely seems like the processor is holding things back. Thanks for the advice!

The 5800X3D is still a good choice if keeping DDR4 is important, but don’t overlook the Ryzen 7 5700X3D or a discounted 14600K. Both can provide excellent performance for the money. For an AM4 build, a B550 board is a straightforward option, and you’ll need to budget for a capable CPU cooler.

If you’re buying a completely new platform, AM5 may be worth considering for the upgrade path. Even a Ryzen 5 7600 or similar chip can perform around the level of a 5800X3D in many situations, and future AM5 processors should remain compatible with newer boards. You could start with 16GB of DDR5 and add more later if the budget is tight, though 32GB is preferable for a new gaming build.
