Is Upgrading from an RTX 2080 Super to an RX 9070 GRE Worth It for 1440p Gaming?

I'm considering replacing my RTX 2080 Super with an RX 9070 GRE so I can play at 1440p with high or ultra settings. Would this be a worthwhile upgrade, and would an Intel Core i5-14400F paired with the RX 9070 GRE be powerful enough for modern 1440p gaming? I'm also wondering whether it makes more sense to spend extra on the RX 9070 or RX 9070 XT for better performance and longevity.

The GRE is a good purchase if itโ€™s priced around $500 or noticeably cheaper than the RX 9070. Otherwise, the regular RX 9070 is probably the better value: it offers more performance and 16GB of VRAM, which gives it more breathing room for future games. If the price difference is only about $50, Iโ€™d choose the RX 9070.

For longer-term use, Iโ€™d lean toward the RX 9070 or RX 9070 XT instead of the GRE. The extra VRAM and performance could matter as newer games become more demanding. The GRE still makes sense when the discount is substantial, but itโ€™s harder to justify if the faster 16GB model is only slightly more expensive.

Yes, the RX 9070 GRE would be a substantial upgrade over the RTX 2080 Superโ€”roughly 60โ€“70% faster in many games, depending on the title. It should handle 1440p very well at high or ultra settings, although demanding ray-tracing games may require some settings adjustments. The 12GB of VRAM is generally usable at 1440p, but it may become a limitation sooner than a 16GB card.

The i5-14400F is a good match for this class of GPU. At 1440p, the graphics card will usually be the limiting factor, and the processor should deliver strong results in modern games. Just make sure the power supply, case airflow, and cooling are suitable for the new card.
