I'm 23, earn a good wage, and have roughly $600 per month left over after expenses. I'm considering spending about $1,300 on a major GPU upgrade and possibly a new power supply. My current system has a Prime Z790-V motherboard, a 650W Gold PSU, a Zotac RTX 3060 12GB, an i9-12900K, 64GB of RAM, and a 165Hz 1440p ultrawide monitor. I'd like to play some demanding games at a consistent 1440p and 165Hz without lowering settings or dealing with stutters. Would a 5070 Ti be a worthwhile upgrade, or should I consider an RX 9070 XT or another higher-end card? Do I actually need to replace my PSU, and if so, what wattage and quality level should I look for?

Before spending the full budget, check benchmarks for the games you play at your monitor’s ultrawide resolution. A 5070 Ti or 9070 XT would be a dramatic upgrade from the 3060, but your CPU, memory, and motherboard are already strong enough that you only need to focus on the GPU and possibly the PSU. Prioritize a reliable power supply over chasing an unnecessarily high wattage rating.
Don’t buy a more expensive card just because you’re worried prices might rise. Upgrade when your current GPU is limiting the games and settings you actually use. If you already have the money set aside and want the smoother performance, there’s no obvious reason to wait for an imminent price drop, but make sure the upgrade solves a real problem rather than being purely an impulse purchase.
The RX 9070 XT is worth considering because it offers performance in the same general class as the 5070 Ti and is often cheaper. The standard RX 9070 is also an option if you want lower power consumption and a better price while still getting a large improvement over the RTX 3060. Compare actual prices, game performance, ray tracing needs, and upscaling features rather than choosing solely by model number.
Your current PC is still a very capable 1440p system, so there’s no urgent need to upgrade unless specific games are giving you trouble. If you do want a substantial performance jump, both the RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT make sense. The 9070 XT is often the better value if you’re comfortable using AMD, while the 5070 Ti may be preferable if you care about Nvidia features such as CUDA, ray tracing performance, or DLSS.

Check the exact model of your existing 650W power supply before buying another one. A high-quality 650W unit may be sufficient for some of these cards, but newer GPUs can require a modern power connector and extra headroom, especially with a power-hungry i9-12900K. If replacing it, choose a reputable Gold-rated ATX 3.x unit with the appropriate native GPU connector. An excellent 850W model is generally a sensible choice; 1000W is fine if the price difference is small, but it isn’t automatically necessary.
