I'm fairly new to building PCs and could use some advice. I'm considering upgrading from an RTX 3070 Ti to an RX 9070 for about $650. My system has an 850W power supply, a Ryzen 7 5800X, and 32GB of RAM. Is the performance increase worth the price? If I go ahead with it, what power connectors will I need? The PC was purchased second-hand, and I don't have the original cables that came with the power supply. The PSU may already be five or six years old, so I'm also wondering whether it would be safer to replace it rather than try to find compatible cables.

Before buying cables, identify the exact make and model of the power supply. If it is five or six years old and you cannot verify its condition or locate compatible cables, replacing it with a reputable modern 850W unit is the safer option. The new PSU will include the correct PCIe cables for the card.
The upgrade should provide a noticeable improvement over a 3070 Ti, especially at higher resolutions, but whether $650 is worthwhile depends on the games you play and your expectations. Make sure you compare the exact prices in your area, because the RX 9070 XT may be close enough in price to offer better value. Your 5800X should be capable enough for this class of GPU in most situations.
That’s reassuring. I’m mainly interested in moving to the newer generation and having 16GB of VRAM, but I’m not sure the extra cost for the XT is justified for only a modest performance increase.
The exact RX 9070 model determines the connector setup, but many cards use two standard 8-pin PCIe power connectors. Use separate PCIe cables from the PSU when possible rather than relying on one daisy-chained cable. Follow the card and PSU manuals, and never substitute CPU/EPS cables for PCIe cables.
Do not use modular PSU cables from another power supply unless you have confirmed they are specifically compatible with your exact PSU model. The connectors can look identical while being wired differently, which can damage the graphics card or other components. Check the GPU’s requirements and use the original cables or a verified replacement set.
