Is Upgrading from i5 12400F to i7 14700KF Worth It for Gaming?

I'm considering upgrading my CPU from an i5 12400F to an i7 14700KF, and I want to know if it's worth it for gaming. I enjoy playing games like Fortnite, Rocket League, COD, Valorant, Rust, and Roblox. While I understand that some suggest getting an x3d CPU for better performance, I'm hesitant to switch motherboards and deal with the high costs of DDR5 RAM. Given my current setup—an RTX 5070, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and the i5-12400—should I go ahead with the upgrade, or stick with what I have?

Honestly, the amount of L3 cache may not make a huge difference for Rust. I run a 5700X3D, and while Rust is demanding, my system memory usage spikes. You might want to upgrade your RAM before worrying too much about the CPU.

It really comes down to the price difference. If your current motherboard and RAM can be reused easily, this could be a fantastic upgrade.

I just watched a video comparing both processors; at 1080p, the gains are minimal—around a 10% increase in FPS. If you're after a substantial performance boost, saving up for an x3D chip would be smarter in the long run.

Yeah, I think I’ll save for the x3D chip, but swapping motherboards will be a hassle!

Definitely check into prices for the 13600KF or 14600KF; they might be great gaming CPUs and could be more budget-friendly than the i7.

Thanks for the tip, I’ll look into those options!

Upgrading to the i7 14700KF could boost your gaming performance, but honestly, the improvement might not justify the cost. I’d suggest holding onto your 12400F for now and saving that money for a better option in the future, like an x3d bundle. That could provide way more value than sticking with the current LGA 1700 socket.

I’d love to see the bundle you're mentioning, as I’d really like an x3d chip for Rust. Could you point me in the right direction?

Totally agree with you on that!

In my opinion, upgrading might not be necessary unless you're aiming for extremely high FPS. The cost of DDR5 is also hefty, so if you're not struggling with your current CPU, I'd wait for better deals or future tech like DDR6.

I definitely want higher FPS lol, but I do feel some bottlenecking in certain games.

Check the pricing on the 14600K first—it might give you similar performance to the 14700K for less money. Plus, your 12400F should still hold up for quite a while if you want to save for a completely new platform down the road.

You can currently snag a 14600KF for about $230. With your RTX 5070, that upgrade might be worthwhile over the 14700KF. Just keep in mind your motherboard's capabilities; if it's basic, it might throttle the CPU, making the upgrade pointless.
