Is upgrading my AM4 PC to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and RX 9060 XT worth it for 1080p at 240Hz?

I built my current PC in 2020 with an MSI B450 Tomahawk Max, Ryzen 5 3600 using the stock Wraith Stealth cooler, RTX 2060 Super 8GB, 32GB of DDR4-3200 CL16 memory, and an 850W Seasonic Focus GX power supply. I'm considering upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D with a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE cooler and a Gigabyte RX 9060 XT 16GB Gaming OC. In Sweden, the CPU costs about $417, the cooler $54, and the graphics card $652, bringing the total upgrade to roughly 11,278 SEK, or $1,123. I want to keep my AM4 platform rather than build a new system right now. My main goal is smoother 1080p gaming at high refresh rates, especially in games like Guild Wars 2, upcoming MMORPGs, World of Warcraft, and Counter-Strike 2. I'd also like to play newer releases at reasonable settings and frame rates, even if ultra quality isn't realistic. Is this combination a worthwhile way to extend the life of my current system?

A 5800X3D-based system can still deliver what feels like entry-level current-generation performance without the cost of moving to a new socket. People who have made this kind of upgrade generally seem very happy with the results, provided the CPU and GPU prices are reasonable.

The 5800X3D should not be a gaming bottleneck yet. It’s strong enough for high-FPS 1080p and can even handle a powerful graphics card at 1440p. If you want to keep this PC for several more years and avoid current platform prices, upgrading the CPU, cooler, and GPU is a reasonable plan.

That’s reassuring to hear. I’m mainly trying to extend the life of the current system rather than spend on a completely new build right now.

The RX 9060 XT 16GB should perform well at 1080p and can also serve as an entry-level 1440p card. However, the 16GB version may be poor value at the Swedish price you listed. At 1080p, you can usually run demanding games at high settings without needing that much VRAM, so compare it with cheaper 8GB or 12GB alternatives before buying.

Check the price of the 5800X3D carefully and consider alternatives such as the Ryzen 7 5700X3D, Ryzen 5 5600, or Ryzen 7 5800XT if they are substantially cheaper. Also remember that your B450 board will run the new GPU through PCIe 3.0. That usually isn’t a major issue, but cards with a narrow PCIe interface can lose more performance than cards with a wider interface, so it’s worth checking benchmarks for the exact model.

That’s a very sensible AM4 upgrade. The 5800X3D is still an excellent gaming CPU and should be more than capable for high-refresh 1080p, especially in MMORPGs and other CPU-heavy games. Paired with a modern midrange GPU, it should give the system a lot more life without forcing you into a full platform rebuild.
