Is upgrading my CPU worthwhile with an RTX 5090 at 5120×1440?

I'm considering whether any part of my current PC is worth upgrading. My system has an Intel Core i7-13700KF, a ZOTAC RTX 5090 Solid OC 32GB, an ASUS PRIME Z790-P WIFI motherboard, 64GB of DDR5-5600 memory using four 16GB modules, a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB SSD, a TeamGroup T-Force Cardea Z44Q 2TB SSD, a 3TB Seagate Barracuda hard drive, a Phanteks AMP 1000W 80+ Gold power supply, and a Phanteks Glacier One 360MPH cooler. I use it for architecture-related work and gaming on a Samsung Odyssey OLED G95SC ultrawide at 5120×1440 and 240Hz. The GPU is typically above 95% utilization, so I'm wondering whether replacing the 13700KF with a newer AMD X3D processor and motherboard would produce a noticeable improvement at this resolution, or whether the upgrade would mostly be wasted money. I'd also appreciate advice on any other component that might be worth changing.

For architecture and other heavily threaded work, a higher-core-count processor such as a Ryzen 9 X3D model could offer a meaningful productivity improvement, while a Ryzen 7 X3D chip would be more focused on gaming. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D-class parts are the sort of upgrade that could make sense for both uses, but only if your professional workloads are currently limited by CPU performance. Otherwise, the cost of replacing the motherboard and CPU is hard to justify.

Your system is already extremely high-end, and at 5120×1440 the RTX 5090 will usually be the limiting component. If the GPU is consistently above roughly 95% utilization, moving to a newer gaming CPU probably won’t make much difference in actual gameplay. I’d keep the current platform unless you have a specific CPU-limited game, poor frame-time consistency, or a productivity workload that is taking too long.

The memory is the only part I’d consider reviewing, but it isn’t an urgent problem. DDR5-5600 is somewhat conservative, though 64GB is useful for architecture work. Four DIMMs do not create quad-channel memory—your platform is still dual-channel—and adding or replacing RAM should only be done if you need more capacity or can verify a real performance limitation. Keep the existing kit if it is stable.

An X3D chip could show a larger advantage in 1080p or other CPU-limited benchmarks, but those results don’t translate directly to your ultrawide resolution. At your settings, the improvement would likely be small—perhaps only noticeable in select games or when targeting extremely high minimum FPS. A platform change would mean buying both a new CPU and motherboard, so it doesn’t look like a good value right now.

I wouldn’t change anything else. The 1000W power supply is appropriate for the graphics card if it has the required modern GPU power connector or a properly rated cable, and the storage, cooling, and motherboard are already suitable. Upgrade when a specific workload or game shows a measurable limitation rather than upgrading simply because newer parts exist.
