Is Upgrading to 32GB of RAM Worth It, or Is Speed More Important?

My current system has 16GB of RAM, and I'm considering upgrading to a 32GB kit with two 16GB DDR5 modules rated around 6000 MT/s. The kit I found costs roughly $550โ€“$570, so I want to make sure the upgrade is actually worthwhile and compatible with my motherboard before buying. My CPU and GPU still handle most of the games I play fairly well, but heavily modded Minecraft and some newer games can use a lot of memory. A few games become unstable or crash when I run them with uncapped frame rates, although limiting them to 60 FPS usually makes them behave. I've also noticed Windows sometimes reports high memory usage from games or Chrome, even when I don't have an unusual number of browser tabs open. How important is RAM speed compared with capacity? Would moving from 16GB to 32GB make a noticeable difference, or should I only upgrade if I'm actually running out of memory?

Before spending that much, check actual memory pressure rather than just the percentage shown in Task Manager. A game using 60% of your RAM isnโ€™t necessarily a problem; Windows and applications will use available memory for caching. Look for committed memory approaching the system limit, paging activity, or the gameโ€™s usage steadily consuming nearly all available RAM.

MellowCactus47: Iโ€™ve mainly been watching the memory percentage in Task Manager, so I may be overinterpreting it. Iโ€™ll check whether the system is actually paging or hitting its commit limit.

If your system is stable and games only misbehave with uncapped frame rates, RAM may not be the main cause. Check GPU temperatures, graphics memory usage, drivers, CPU load, game-specific settings, and power limits too. Limiting the frame rate can reduce GPU and CPU load, which may explain why the crashes stop. Upgrade to 32GB if you need it for modded games or multitasking, but donโ€™t expect faster RAM alone to transform performance.

$550โ€“$570 for 32GB is extremely expensive, regardless of whether itโ€™s DDR5. Iโ€™d wait, compare more retailers, or check whether your motherboard and CPU can run a less expensive kit. Also verify the motherboardโ€™s memory support list and the processorโ€™s recommended memory speed before buying. Mixing another pair of modules can work, but a matched 2-stick kit is usually easier to run at its rated speed.

NimbleHarbor6: If your current 16GB is already a compatible two-stick kit, adding matching modules might cost less, but four sticks can put more strain on the memory controller and may require running below the advertised speed.

Capacity and speed solve different problems. More RAM helps when your system is actually running short and starts relying on the page file, while faster RAM usually provides a much smaller performance improvement once you have enough capacity. For gaming and multitasking, 32GB is a reasonable target, but it wonโ€™t automatically fix every crash or stutter.

MellowCactus47: That makes sense. The games Iโ€™m most concerned about include heavily modded Minecraft and some newer titles. Theyโ€™re generally fine at 60 FPS, but uncapped frame rates sometimes make them lock up or crash.
