Hey everyone! I'm considering upgrading my CPU and I could use some guidance. Here's my current setup:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX5700XT
- Motherboard: B550M-plus AM4
- RAM: DDR4 3200-16 Vengeance
- PSU: Seasonic Focus GX-650
I've already purchased an RX 9070XT GPU along with a 1000W PSU. I am looking to eventually upgrade to an AM5 motherboard and CPU, plus 32GB of DDR5 RAM, but as you know, the prices are through the roof. Should I consider an upgrade to a better AM4 CPU in the meantime? If so, which one would you recommend?

I’d suggest anything from a 5700X up to a 5800X3D. Those are still solid choices, but the X3D can be hard to come by at good prices these days.
If you’re looking to stay in AM4 for a couple of years, getting the 5700X3D or 5800X3D would be a wise choice. You’d be good for future games that want more CPU power!
What games are you playing? Most of them might not give you a significant upgrade from the 3600, to be honest.
If you’re on a budget, the 5700X is a great pick. It’s affordable for now, and it’ll let you push your GPU harder by tweaking game settings without bottling it up with the CPU. I've got a similar setup and it works wonders!
Definitely look for a 5700X3D or 5800X3D to maximize your current AM4 setup! Your new GPU deserves a better CPU than the 3600. Plus, DDR5 prices are just too high right now, so it makes sense to stick with AM4 for now.
I felt the same way, but finding a 5800X3D can be tricky these days. I almost thought about selling my old setup instead of upgrading! It's wild how scarce they've gotten.
You're right, the prices for AM4 X3D CPUs are insane now. I’d say a regular 5800X is your best bet if you can find it for a reasonable price.
Same here! The prices of 5800X3D are ridiculous now. A 5700X is probably the better choice unless you can snag the X3D at a discount.
Thanks everyone for your input! I ended up buying the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X for €175. I was hunting for the X3D version, but it seems like it’s hard to find these days.
It really depends on your location. I just upgraded to AM5 and while RAM prices are steep, CPU prices have come down a bit. You might want to check the current market trends in your area before making any decisions. It’s also a good idea to think long-term since solid-state prices will probably keep increasing—and going AM5 sets you up for future CPU options.
I’m with you on that! In the Netherlands, AM5 motherboards are fine, but DDR5 prices are just wild right now. If I could just use my DDR4 RAM, I would have upgraded already.
Honestly, a 5600 or 5700X paired with your 9070XT would give you a significant boost. It's a solid upgrade while waiting for better prices.

I'm into Battlefield 6 and Planet Zoo, and I notice my CPU maxing out during intense moments with a lot of players or NPCs.
