Is visible grain and blurriness normal on a 24-inch 1080p monitor?

I can clearly see individual pixels and a hazy, smeared-looking texture on my 24-inch 1080p monitor, especially over white or other light colors. It resembles a dirty screen protector or a monitor that was wiped with a damp cloth while powered on. In games, bright skies look grainy and slightly pixelated, and slowly scrolling through a light-colored webpage seems to produce moving pixel trails or artifacts. I tested another ASUS monitor at a computer shop and noticed a similar effect, so I'm unsure whether this is normal for 1080p at this size, related to the screen coating, or a fault with my display. Would moving to 1440p noticeably improve the image?

1080p on a 24-inch display has fairly low pixel density, so text, skies, and other large smooth areas can look grainy from a normal desk distance. A 27-inch 1440p monitor gives roughly 18% higher pixel density and is usually a noticeable improvement. A 24-inch 1440p model would look sharper still, with around 33% higher pixel density, if your computer can drive it.

Some pixel visibility is normal at 1080p, depending on your eyesight and how far you sit from the screen. However, a strong smeared or rainbow-like coating effect could also be caused by the panelโ€™s anti-glare finish. Since you saw something similar on another monitor, it may be a characteristic of this type of display rather than a defect.

MellowCactus47: That makes sense. The effect really does look like a coating issue rather than simple pixel density, almost like a dirty screen protector.

The visibility of pixels depends heavily on viewing distance. Even much higher-resolution ultrawide monitors can show their pixel structure when viewed close up. Try sitting a little farther away and check whether the effect changes; if it does, the main issue is probably pixel density rather than a damaged panel.
