My Dell Inspiron 15 5584 with a touchscreen suddenly started showing persistent screen glitching and ghosting. The problem appears at every screen angle, remains visible in the BIOS, and the touchscreen itself still works normally. The laptop is old and out of warranty, and repairs are expensive where I live, so I want to identify the likely cause before paying for a repair. My dad has successfully replaced the charging port and battery and may be able to handle the repair, but we are unsure whether the LCD panel or display cable should be replaced. I rely on this laptop for university and would like to salvage it if possible.

Because the distortion is also visible in the BIOS, this is very unlikely to be a Windows or graphics-driver problem. Since it happens at every screen angle, the LCD panel itself is the more likely failure, although a loose or damaged cable is still possible. Before buying parts, your dad could disconnect and reseat the display cable and inspect it for damage. If that changes nothing, testing with an external monitor can help confirm that the laptop's graphics system is working and that the fault is limited to the internal display. Based on these symptoms, I would expect an LCD replacement to be more likely than a cable replacement.

The touchscreen still responds normally, and the glitch remains even when I enter BIOS. We will try reseating and checking the cable before ordering an LCD panel.
