I cleaned the fans, motherboard, graphics chip, and CPU inside my laptop using wet floor-cleaning wipes. Now, when I press the power button, the USB ports receive power for about a second, but the laptop immediately shuts down. What should I do to diagnose or fix it?

For future cleaning, use compressed air or an electronics-safe brush for dust, and only use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on appropriate parts when necessary. Do not use household wet wipes inside a computer. Since the machine now briefly powers USB and shuts down, repeated attempts could worsen a short, so let a repair technician inspect it if you aren’t experienced with laptop disassembly.

Because this is a laptop, check whether the battery was disconnected before cleaning. A tiny amount of moisture or residue around the motherboard, charging circuit, or power button can trigger immediate shutdown. Once it has dried, inspect for visible dampness, sticky residue, or corrosion. If it still powers off instantly, it likely needs board-level diagnosis rather than just reseating components.

It’s a laptop, and I used floor-cleaning wet wipes rather than electronics cleaning wipes. I thought they would remove the dirt, but I didn’t realize they could leave residue.

Stop trying to power it on and disconnect the charger immediately. Wet wipes can leave moisture and cleaning residue behind, which may cause a short circuit. If you’re comfortable opening the laptop, disconnect the internal battery and let everything dry completely in a warm, dry, well-ventilated place for at least 24–48 hours. Don’t use a hair dryer or apply direct heat. Afterward, the residue may need to be cleaned with high-percentage isopropyl alcohol, but professional repair is the safer option.
