Looking for Alternatives to Backup Exec for Tape Backups

I'm searching for alternatives to Backup Exec, which we've been using for tape backups for our SMB customers. With Arctera/Backup Exec being sold and the new site looking uncertain, we're in need of reliable options that can handle tape backups. I know that Veeam has some capabilities for this, but I've yet to fully test it myself. We currently use Veeam for VM-level backups, and since we back up to tape for offline and offsite storage, I'd like to find something effective for our on-premises backups which involve about 3-5 Windows VMs.

If you're exploring options, Bacula or Amanda can work, but be prepared for a steep learning curve. If you want something straightforward, I’d suggest Commvault or Acronis for ease of use.

Definitely Veeam! We run backups to disk and then create separate jobs to copy those to tape. The system works fine, and the backup options are quite helpful.

We've transitioned to Veeam for tape backups after using Backup Exec, and I must say, Veeam has shown better usability and reliability. We mainly backup to disk first, and then use those jobs for tape and cloud backups.

Check out Veritas NetBackup as well. It might be a good fit for your needs.

I highly recommend Veeam. Their tape backup functionality is solid—I was able to move several terabytes of data to tape nightly. For your setup with 3-5 VMs, consider switching from tape to rotating external hard drives for easy management.
