MSI B850 or X870E for a Ryzen 9850X3D and RTX 5080 gaming build?

I'm putting together a high-end gaming PC with an ASUS TUF RTX 5080 OC and a Ryzen 9850X3D. The rest of the parts will likely include a 360mm Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro, 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 memory, a Lian Li Lancool 217 case, a 1000W-or-higher Platinum power supply, and 1TB plus 2TB Samsung 990 Pro NVMe drives. The system will mainly be used for gaming at 1440p on a 540Hz monitor.

I'm deciding between the MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI 2 for €308 and the MSI MAG X870E TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI for €334. Which board makes more sense for this build? I'd appreciate a breakdown of their practical differences, including connectivity, storage support, expansion, and any meaningful upgrade or future-proofing benefits. Suggestions for other suitable boards are welcome too.

For gaming performance, either board should perform essentially the same. The choice mainly comes down to features rather than frame rates, VRM capability, or overclocking potential. Compare the rear I/O, number and speed of M.2 slots, USB connectivity, networking, Wi-Fi, and the physical design that fits your build.

I wouldn’t choose based on the chipset label alone. Buy the least expensive board that has the connections and expansion options you’ll actually use. A 9850X3D and RTX 5080 won’t gain gaming performance simply from being installed on an X870E board, and both should be capable of handling the processor properly.

The X870E makes more sense here only because the price gap is small and it gives you more flexibility for future storage, USB4 devices, or later CPU upgrades. Also double-check whether you really need premium 990 Pro SSDs and a Platinum-rated PSU, since those choices may offer less practical benefit than putting the savings toward other components.

The X870E generally gives you more connectivity: USB4, additional or faster USB ports, more M.2 support, and potentially more expansion lanes. Those features are useful if you plan to add several NVMe drives, high-speed peripherals, extra expansion cards, or specialized devices. For a normal single-GPU gaming system with one or two SSDs, most of that extra capability will go unused.

Since these particular boards are only €26 apart, the X870E is a reasonable buy if you value the extra ports and storage options. Otherwise, a less expensive B850 board that still has the I/O you need would be better value.

It’s also worth checking the detailed lane-sharing layout. Some M.2 or expansion slots can reduce the bandwidth available to other slots, so compare the motherboard manuals rather than relying only on the chipset name.
