New PC downloads at only 35 Mbps despite having a fast PCIe 5.0 SSD

I just finished building a new PC, and downloads are topping out around 35 Mbps even though my Wi‑Fi connection seems good and the system has a Gen 5 NVMe SSD. This isn't a confusion between Mbps and MBps—the performance genuinely seems lower than expected. What could be causing the bottleneck?

What are you downloading from and to? An internet download is limited by the connection and remote server, while copying files within your network can be limited by the other drive, a USB device, Ethernet, or Wi‑Fi. Even a much older hard drive is usually capable of more than 35 MB/s, so the SSD is probably not the first thing to investigate.

The SSD probably isn’t the limiting factor for an internet download. Check the actual download rate shown by the launcher, then compare it with Task Manager’s network and disk activity. Also test the drive with CrystalDiskMark to confirm it’s performing normally. The download server, game launcher, ISP, or your internet plan may simply be limiting the speed.

Wi‑Fi can only deliver whatever speed your internet connection provides. Check your ISP plan and compare the advertised speed with a speed test near the PC. Router distance, walls, signal strength, and the Wi‑Fi adapter can also matter, so include your router, adapter, motherboard, and internet plan when troubleshooting.

Make sure the motherboard actually supports PCIe 5.0 for the M.2 slot where the drive is installed. If it only supports PCIe 4.0, the SSD will run at Gen 4 speeds—but that still should be far faster than a 35 Mbps internet download. PCIe generation is unlikely to explain this particular symptom.
