My PC started lagging during a gaming session, then the display froze while Discord audio and voice chat continued working. After shutting it down with the power button, it began starting with orange and red motherboard lights, followed by green or white, but no video signal. After many power cycles it would occasionally boot normally, although it then started freezing after anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. The problem has progressively worsened over three days, and now the computer may freeze during startup or shortly afterward. I'm using a Radeon 9070 XT, Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and an ASRock Steel Legend X870 motherboard. I've checked the cables and basic component connections. What should I test first to identify the failing part?

The orange, red, green, and white lights are normally the motherboard’s POST checks. They are not necessarily a problem if they move through the sequence and turn off. If one stays lit, its label matters. Because the PC originally froze under gaming load and has become less reliable, try a known-good power supply as well; a PSU failing under load is a strong possibility. Also reset any overclock or memory profile to default while testing.
Remove the graphics card temporarily and connect the monitor to the motherboard video output, since the 7800X3D has integrated graphics. If the system becomes stable, the GPU or its power delivery becomes the main suspect. If it still freezes, test the memory and other components instead.
Start by reseating the RAM, 24-pin motherboard cable, CPU power cable, and GPU power connections. A marginal connection can cause inconsistent booting, and the fact that the number of attempts needed keeps increasing suggests a hardware problem rather than a one-time software crash.
Run a proper memory test such as MemTest86 or Memtest86+ with the graphics card removed if possible. Test one RAM stick at a time and use the recommended motherboard slot. Memory errors can cause both failed boots and seemingly random freezes that basic diagnostics miss.

The system sometimes boots and runs normally, but it can also freeze after only a couple of minutes or even before Windows loads. I’ve already checked the cables, so I’ll try isolating the GPU and memory next.
