My custom-built PC worked normally until today. When I press the power button, the fans or case lighting briefly flicker, but the system does not start. Before this happened, I occasionally lost display output, and then my open applications would gradually close before the computer shut itself down. I opened the case and checked the connections, but nothing appeared loose. Could the power supply be failing, or might there be a short or another hardware problem?

A very brief flash of LEDs or fans followed by no startup can indicate that the power supply is immediately triggering its over-current protection. That often points to a short circuit or a faulty component somewhere in the build, although the PSU itself could also be failing. Disconnect the GPU, drives, extra fans, and other peripherals from the PSU, leaving only the motherboard’s main connection if necessary, and test again. Also inspect for misplaced motherboard standoffs, damaged cables, or anything metallic touching the board.
I disconnected everything from the PSU except the motherboard’s 24-pin connection. After pressing the power button, there were no lights, sounds, or other signs of activity.
