My computer powered off in the middle of a system update. I'm not sure whether it was a kernel update or a regular batch of updates—the update screen appeared after the desktop loaded and showed dozens of pending updates. I suspect overheating, but I don't know how to confirm the cause or safely finish the update.

First check whether the computer is overheating or losing power. Make sure the fans and vents are clear, monitor CPU temperatures, and check that the power cable or charger is secure. If it shuts off abruptly rather than showing a normal shutdown message, heat or a power issue is more likely than the update itself.
It could have been a regular group of system updates or a kernel update. After restarting, open the system’s update tool and check whether anything is incomplete. Run the updates again, then reboot normally. If the update manager reports broken or unfinished packages, use its repair option before trying another update. Avoid forcing the computer off while updates are installing.
I don’t know which kind it was—the updater appeared after the desktop loaded and said there were around 70 updates available.
It shut down while the update was running. I’m not sure how to tell whether heat caused it, but overheating seems possible.
