Problem with Missing Webcam on HP Omen 16

I have an HP Omen 16 laptop and I'm facing a frustrating issue: my internal webcam, which worked perfectly yesterday, has completely vanished from Windows today. Instead of appearing under the Cameras or Imaging Devices sections, it shows up under Universal Serial Bus controllers, displaying 'Descriptor Request Failed.' I've performed several troubleshooting steps including resetting BIOS CMOS, conducting an EC reset, and trying USB resets, all of which haven't worked. Windows detects power on the internal USB bus, but the webcam isn't returning any descriptors. From my research, I've read that the ribbon cable could be loose at the top bezel or hinge, or possibly the webcam module has failed. Can anyone confirm if this issue is typically caused by a loose cable or a defective webcam module on Omen laptops? Should I consider opening the screen bezel to reseat the cable, or is it safer to take it to a repair shop?

If the ribbon cable hasn’t been touched, it’s probably safe to say it hasn’t come loose. In my experience, if the webcam is completely unresponsive, it’s usually a sign that the module itself has failed. It might be worth looking into getting it replaced rather than just reseating the cable.

Have you checked if the camera privacy shutter is open? Sometimes that can be the issue. Also, you might want to reboot your PC or try resetting the BIOS again, just in case that helps—sometimes that does the trick!

I went through this with my Zephyrus G14 last week! The camera just refused to start up out of nowhere. So annoying! Sometimes these issues crop up unexpectedly with laptops.
