Recommendations for a Gaming Headset Under $300

I'm looking for a high-quality gaming headset with a built-in microphone, specifically for playing Apex Legends. My budget is around $300, and I really need clear audio to hear footsteps and accurately position myself in the game. Comfort is also key since I plan on gaming for long hours. If there aren't any good headsets with solid mics in this price range, I'd love suggestions for compact desk microphones that would work well with a quality headset.

I wouldn't recommend spending the full $300 on a headset that combines both headphones and mic. Instead, you could buy a solid pair of headphones for about $180-200 and then pair it with a decent desk mic for around $100-120. Gaming headsets tend to be overpriced, and you'll often find that one part fails before the other, which defeats the purpose of buying a combined solution.

Another solid option is the ATH-M50x with the USB connectivity. They provide great quality for both gaming and music!

Consider the Philips SHP9500 paired with a ModMic. Trust me, gaming headsets often sound muddier and are prone to break easily. The SHP9500s will give you great sound quality and comfort.

If you're after sound immersion, try open-back headphones. I had amazing experiences with the Sennheiser HD 598 SR paired with a cheap E10K DAC and amp combo. Just be cautious of sound bleed and weaker bass. Alternatively, the Sennheiser PC38x is open-back with a built-in mic, so it could be a perfect fit without needing an amp.

Totally agree with the dedicated equipment approach. You can snag the Fidelio X3s for about $95 as open-box items; they're great for sound quality. Pair that with something like the Aokeo AK58 for $40 or the Fifine K688 for $72. Just make sure to check if your motherboard supports USB-C for a smooth connection. Also, be prepared to equalize the X3s if you find their treble a bit harsh, though. All in all, you'll get fantastic audio quality with this setup!
