I'm thinking about replacing my RTX 3060 Ti with a GPU that has considerably more VRAM for daily work, including running local LLMs for agent coding, while also delivering much better gaming performance. The RX 7900 XTX is dramatically faster in conventional rasterized games and offers 24 GB of VRAM, but I haven't found a clear comparison of its ray-tracing and path-tracing performance against the 3060 Ti. My priorities are VRAM first, then raw performance, ray tracing, power consumption, and finally price. How large is the gap between these cards in RT and path-traced games, and would the 7900 XTX be a sensible upgrade for this mix of workloads?

Path tracing is where the RX 7900 XTX struggles. In an especially demanding title such as Cyberpunk 2077 with the highest path-tracing mode enabled, it can land around 3060 Ti or 3070 performance, despite being much faster in rasterization. The 3060 Ti is also severely limited by its 8 GB of VRAM, but the XTX should not be chosen specifically for RT or path tracing.
The 7900 XTX is vastly faster in normal rasterized rendering and its 24 GB of VRAM is much more useful for local LLM work. However, its ray-tracing advantage over the 3060 Ti is surprisingly small in some heavily path-traced games. In those cases, the XTX can perform only around 10–30% better, depending on the title and settings.
The extra VRAM is mainly for running local LLMs used in agent coding, so that’s a major factor for me.
If ray tracing is a major priority, an Nvidia RTX 4000- or 5000-series card is generally the safer choice because of stronger RT hardware, upscaling, and software support. A card such as the RTX 4070 Ti can be dramatically faster than both the 3060 Ti and 7900 XTX in extreme path-tracing tests, but it has less VRAM and is therefore less attractive for local LLMs. AMD’s newer RX 9070 XT is a better RT option than the 7900 XTX while retaining strong raster performance, but it still isn’t ideal if maximum path-tracing performance is the goal.

That’s close to the worst-case scenario, though other path-traced games can show a somewhat larger gap. The general pattern remains the same: the XTX is a rasterization powerhouse but not a strong RT-per-dollar option.
