I'm building a new PC mainly for video editing and plan to pair the GPU with an Intel Core Ultra 5 250K Plus. I'm deciding between an RTX 5070 with 12GB of VRAM and an RX 9070 XT with 16GB. How important is the extra VRAM for programs such as DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Pro? My source footage is usually H.264 MP4, with videos up to about two minutes long and some effects or on-screen information added during editing.

The RX 9070 XT is the better gaming card and its 16GB of VRAM gives it more headroom, but that doesn’t automatically make it faster for editing. If you also game regularly, the AMD card may offer better overall value and noticeably higher gaming performance. If video editing is your main task, the RTX 5070’s CUDA and creator-app support are probably worth prioritizing over the extra 4GB of VRAM.

DaVinci Resolve tends to favor Nvidia more as projects become complicated. For basic cutting, transitions, text overlays, and short H.264 videos, either card should work well, so the difference may not be obvious in day-to-day use. I’d choose the RTX 5070 if editing is the priority and the prices are similar, especially if you expect to use AI tools or GPU-heavy effects.

For this kind of editing, the main difference probably isn’t the VRAM capacity—it’s the software acceleration. CUDA and Nvidia’s broader creator support generally give the RTX 5070 an advantage in Premiere and Resolve. In typical benchmarks, the 5070 is roughly 5–10% faster for editing workloads, with the gap becoming more noticeable in Resolve or heavier effects and AI features. Twelve gigabytes should be enough for short H.264 projects unless you plan to work with very high-resolution footage or unusually complex effects.
