RTX 5080 or RX 9070 XT for 4K and VR gaming?

I'm building my first gaming PC after switching from console and plan to pair an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D with either an RTX 5080 for $1,399 new or an RX 9070 XT for $699 new. My main goal is Microsoft Flight Simulator with VR, potentially on a high-resolution headset such as a Pimax. I also want strong 4K performance in games like Battlefield and Warzone. The PC will be connected to an LG C2 OLED running at 120Hz with VRR, and I'd like the system to remain capable for several years. Is the RTX 5080's extra performance, DLSS, frame generation, and VR support worth paying nearly twice as much, or is the RX 9070 XT the better value?

VR changes the comparison somewhat. High-resolution headsets can use a lot of VRAM, and both of these cards have 16GB, so neither is an ideal long-term choice if you eventually move to an especially demanding Pimax setup. Nvidia may also have advantages for variable-rate shading, foveated rendering, upscaling quality, and VR support. If the Pimax upgrade is still far away, buying the 9070 XT now and replacing both the headset and GPU later could be the sensible approach.

The RTX 5080 is clearly faster and has stronger upscaling, frame-generation features, and broader software support, which can matter quite a bit for VR. However, it costs about twice as much for a much smaller performance increase in ordinary 4K gaming. Unless you specifically need Nvidiaโs feature set or have no interest in saving the money, the RX 9070 XT is the much better value.

For a normal 4K setup, Iโd choose the 9070 XT and put the extra $700 toward other parts or keep it for a future GPU upgrade. It is close enough in rasterized performance that the 5080โs price premium is difficult to justify, and some games such as Call of Duty can favor AMD. The 5080 makes more sense if maximum performance and Nvidia features are your top priorities.

If you want the best value, get the 9070 XT. If you want the strongest option for demanding 4K and VR right now, get the 5080, but go into it knowing youโre paying roughly $700 extra for features and performance rather than twice the gaming speed. The 9070 XT should also be easier to resell later if you decide to upgrade when the next GPU generation arrives.

MellowCedar47: Iโm currently using a PSVR2 and may upgrade to a Pimax later. Since both cards have 16GB, Iโm leaning toward the cheaper 9070 XT for now and upgrading the GPU when I move to the higher-resolution headset.
