RX 9070 or RTX 5070 for 1440p gaming and occasional local AI?

I'm putting together a 1440p gaming PC with a Ryzen 5 7500F, and the Inno3D Dual Fan RTX 5070 and XFX Swift White OC RX 9070 both cost exactly $900 in my area. The RX 9070 XT starts around $1,100 and the RTX 5070 Ti around $1,250, so those are outside my budget. Used hardware is also not an option because I'll be financing the GPU over 12 months.

Gaming is the priority, but I also want to do some light amateur video editing and experiment with local AI, probably language models. I'm using a quality 750W power supply. For this use case, which card is the better long-term purchase?

The AI workload matters more than the gaming difference. If you mainly mean running local language models, the extra VRAM on the RX 9070 can be useful. If you want image or video generation, CUDA and Nvidia’s broader software support usually make the RTX 5070 much easier to get working, especially on Windows. Nvidia is also the safer choice for ray tracing, DLSS, and frame generation.

For gaming alone, the 9070 is the stronger value at the same price. The RTX 5070 has better upscaling and ray-tracing features, while the 9070 offers more raw performance and memory. I’d choose the 5070 only if those Nvidia features or AI compatibility are important enough to outweigh the hardware advantage.

Think about the software you actually plan to use before buying. AMD’s AI support can involve ROCm, Linux, or compatibility workarounds depending on the application, whereas many Nvidia-based tools support CUDA on Windows directly. If you expect to experiment casually and don’t want to troubleshoot, the 5070 is the less complicated option. If AI is only occasional and gaming is clearly the priority, the 9070 makes more sense.
