RX 9070 or RTX 5070 for Windows/Linux, CAD, BIM, and Gaming?

Both the Radeon RX 9070 and GeForce RTX 5070 cost about $890 where I live. I need a multipurpose GPU for a dual-boot Windows and Linux system, mainly for Archicad, BIM, Autodesk software, and gaming. I usually play indie games and older AAA titles several years after release, so I am not particularly interested in DLSS or frame-generation features. Which card would be the better overall choice?

The RTX 5070 makes more sense if your professional workloads benefit from CUDA or NVIDIA-specific acceleration. Some creative, rendering, and technical applications are better supported on NVIDIA, so check whether your exact Archicad, BIM, or Autodesk workflows use CUDA before deciding. For ordinary viewport work and gaming, the 9070 is probably the better value.

For this mix of uses, I’d lean toward the RX 9070. It generally offers more VRAM, strong standard gaming performance, and a smoother Linux experience. Since you aren’t interested in DLSS or frame generation, the RTX 5070’s main gaming advantages matter less here.

The extra VRAM on the RX 9070 is also useful for larger 3D scenes, high-resolution assets, and future games. The RTX 5070 is worth considering mainly for CUDA, specific software compatibility, or if you strongly prefer NVIDIA’s professional-driver ecosystem. Otherwise, the 9070 seems like the more suitable all-rounder at the same price.

AMD is usually the easier choice on Linux because Radeon support is well integrated into the kernel and Mesa stack. NVIDIA’s Linux drivers have improved, but they can still require more setup and troubleshooting. If Linux stability is a major priority and you do not need CUDA, I’d choose the 9070.

That would be my deciding factor too. NVIDIA can work on Linux, but AMD tends to be less hassle for a dual-boot setup.
