Samsung phone intermittently stops detecting my SIM card

My Samsung phone has started losing connection to the SIM card every so often, even though I replaced the SIM about three weeks ago. When this happens, I can't make calls or send texts. Restarting the phone and leaving it powered off for around five minutes sometimes makes the SIM work again, but the problem keeps returning. The phone is about five years old, and I'm wondering whether this is caused by the SIM reader, software, age, or something unrelated like limited storage. The model is SM-G781U. What should I check next?

Make sure the SIM tray is seated completely and that the card and metal contacts are clean and undamaged. Avoid forcing anything into the tray. If reseating the card and trying another known-good SIM does not help, replacing or repairing the phone is likely more practical than repeatedly swapping SIM cards.

Since the SIM is fairly new, contact your mobile carrier and explain that the phone is repeatedly losing SIM detection. They can check the line, test or replace the SIM again, and tell you whether the device needs service or replacement. Restarting only restores it temporarily, so it probably isn’t a lasting fix.

The phone’s storage being nearly full generally won’t cause it to physically stop detecting a SIM card. You can still install system updates and check network settings, but the repeated SIM-not-found behavior points more toward the reader, tray, SIM contacts, or a carrier-side issue.

If this happens with more than one SIM card, the phone is the more likely culprit. The SIM tray or internal reader may be worn, dirty, loose, or damaged, especially if the phone has been dropped. A repair shop or the manufacturer could inspect the reader.
