I installed a 2TB WD Green 2.5-inch SATA SSD in my Alienware 13 laptop and tried installing Windows from a USB installer created with Rufus. Windows Setup detects the SSD at first, but reports that it uses an MBR partition table and cannot be installed to because the system is booting in UEFI mode. Deleting the partitions changes the drive to unallocated space, but selecting it produces error 0x80300002. After refreshing Setup, the SSD disappears, and DiskPart shows it as offline. Running clean and convert gpt also causes the drive to go offline, so I'm unsure whether this is a BIOS setting, a missing storage driver, or a failing/incompatible SSD. The system is set to AHCI, UEFI, and Secure Boot, and the laptop uses the standard Alienware 13 motherboard, model Compal LA-A301P.

The drive going offline during clean or installation is a bigger warning sign than the initial MBR-versus-GPT message. Test the SSD outside the laptop using another computer or a SATA-to-USB adapter, and check its health with a proper SMART tool. A benchmark saying the drive is 'good' doesn’t necessarily rule out intermittent controller, cable, or power problems. If it also disconnects elsewhere, replace the SSD; if it works normally elsewhere, inspect the laptop’s SATA connector, drive caddy, and BIOS storage settings.
Check the SATA/storage mode in BIOS first. Dell and Alienware systems often ship with RAID On enabled, and the Windows installer may not see the drive correctly without the Intel Rapid Storage driver. Switching to AHCI usually resolves that for a clean installation. Since you’re installing to an empty drive, changing modes shouldn’t affect an existing Windows installation.
I already have the system set to AHCI, UEFI, and Secure Boot enabled, but Setup still gives me the same errors.
You may need to load the correct storage controller driver during Windows Setup, such as the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver. This is especially worth checking for the Compal LA-A301P board used in the Alienware 13. However, because the SSD actually becomes offline after partitioning attempts, a driver alone may not explain everything.
I ran a basic CrystalDisk test and it reported the drive as healthy, but I haven’t yet tested it in another system or checked whether the laptop connection is intermittently dropping.
