Should I Add an Internal or External SSD for More Game Storage?

My PC currently has a 512GB SSD, and I'm running out of space as I install more games. I'm considering an external SSD because it seems simple to set up, but I'm not sure whether that's the best choice for a casual gamer. Should I add an internal SATA or M.2 SSD instead, and are there any meaningful performance or reliability differences?

For your situation, Iโd probably add a 1TB or 2TB internal SSD dedicated to games if you have room for one. You can use a larger hard drive for movies, music, photos, and other files that donโt need SSD speeds. That gives you more capacity without spending SSD prices on storage that doesnโt benefit much from fast access.

An external SSD is still perfectly fine for gaming, especially if you want the easiest plug-and-play setup or donโt want to open your case. Performance depends heavily on the USB connection, though, and a slow port or poor cable can limit speeds. A removable M.2 drive in a USB 3.2 or USB4 enclosure can be a flexible option that could later be installed internally.

An external drive makes sense if portability or easy setup is important. I use one as a simple plug-in game library and it works well, but internal storage is the more practical long-term choice if your PC has an available SATA or M.2 connection.

If your motherboard has an unused M.2 slot, an internal NVMe SSD is usually the best option. Itโs generally faster, avoids cable and connection issues, and current pricing often makes internal drives a better value than external ones. Installing one is also fairly straightforwardโjust check your motherboard manual and make sure the slot supports the drive type you buy.
