I'm building a PC mainly for coding, video editing, and some gaming, and I'm considering the Ryzen 9 9950X3D because it's available in a good deal. My home gets very hot, so I want to keep the CPU cool, but I'm also nervous about an AIO pump eventually failing. I'm deciding between a Noctua NH-D15 G2 with A14x25 fans and a liquid cooler. If an AIO makes more sense, should I choose a 360mm or 420mm model, and are options such as the Tryx Panorama, Lian Li Galahad II, Arctic Liquid Freezer III, or NZXT Kraken worth considering? I'm also looking at cases such as the Antec Flux Pro or Fractal Meshify 2 XL and want good airflow without excessive noise.

A liquid cooler makes more sense if you regularly render or encode with every core loaded and want the best temperature or noise results. One user found an Arctic unit around 7–10°C cooler than another dual-fan AIO and didn’t consider the pump noisy. Still, the main benefits were lower noise and appearance, not necessity. If you choose an AIO, a reliable 360mm model is usually the sensible balance; go 420mm only if the case supports it easily and you value the extra thermal headroom.
If pump failure is the part that worries you most, air cooling is probably the better choice. A good dual-tower cooler has no pump to fail, and you can always keep the included fans or replace them with quiet, high-performance models. With a well-ventilated case, the 9950X3D should be perfectly usable for gaming and most editing work.
Air cooling can handle this chip surprisingly well. One owner reported keeping a 9950X3D below about 85°C during sustained all-core encoding in a hot room using a large air cooler and strong case airflow. The only time temperatures reached the limit was when the graphics card was also dumping a lot of heat into the case. Case airflow matters just as much as the cooler, especially with a high-power GPU.
For occasional gaming and normal desktop use, even a Thermalright Phantom Spirit-class cooler should be sufficient. The D15 G2 is in roughly the same general performance range as a good 280mm AIO, so a 360mm cooler would be needed for a noticeable improvement. A 420mm model can provide a larger gap, but the benefit is mostly lower temperatures or less fan noise rather than better everyday performance.

That helps a lot. I’m mostly worried about editing workloads and the hot room, but I also don’t want to overcomplicate the build. I’ll pay close attention to case airflow and may start with the D15 G2 since I’m already uneasy about pump reliability.
