Should I build my 4K gaming PC now or wait for a possible RTX 50-series refresh?

I want to build a new PC mainly for 4K gaming at very high settings in current-generation games. I'm considering an RTX 5080 or possibly an RTX 5070 Ti, but I've seen rumors that refreshed models could increase the memory from 16GB to 24GB. I could wait roughly four to six months and would probably buy the system around Christmas, although I'm concerned that component prices may rise. My budget is currently around €2,500–€3,500, so I could also buy the GPU and DDR5 memory earlier and choose the CPU and motherboard later. How much might the prices of the RTX 5080 or RTX 5070 Ti fall if refreshed models are released? Would it be realistic to sell an existing card and upgrade without losing too much money, or is waiting for an unconfirmed refresh too risky?

Current GPU pricing doesn’t give much reason to expect a predictable drop. Nvidia has limited pressure to reduce prices, and gaming GPUs are a relatively small part of its business compared with its other products. I’d choose the card that meets your needs now and treat any future Super model or discount as a bonus rather than something to plan around.

The Radeon RX 9070 XT is worth considering because it offers strong value, especially if you don’t care much about ray tracing. For high-end 4K gaming with ray tracing or path tracing, though, Nvidia’s cards may still be the better fit depending on the games you play.

The rumored refresh isn’t confirmed, and several people expect it may never happen. Even if a refreshed card is released, there’s no guarantee that the original models will receive a major price cut. Stock levels, demand, and the broader GPU market will matter more than the product name.

I haven’t found a trustworthy source confirming either a release or a cancellation, so waiting solely for that seems risky.

For 4K gaming, the RTX 5080 is the safer choice if you plan to use ray tracing or path tracing. The RTX 5070 Ti can be enough without those features, but demanding path-traced games may require noticeably lower settings or upscaling even at 1440p.

That’s useful to know. I’m definitely interested in high-end 4K settings, so the extra performance could matter to me.

There’s no reliable way to predict the discount. A refresh might lower prices, but it could also launch at a very high price or be delayed or canceled entirely. If you need the PC, buy based on the prices and performance available now rather than assuming a future model will arrive. Buying the GPU early only makes sense if you’re comfortable with the possibility that its resale value drops.

That makes sense. I’ll probably wait a week or so to avoid making such a large purchase impulsively. It should be fine to choose the CPU and motherboard later, though, right?
