I'm in Canada and have saved about $1,400 CAD for my first gaming PC. I mainly want to play games such as Project Zomboid, Left 4 Dead 2, Minecraft, and other multiplayer games with friends, sometimes using mods. I'm not aiming for ultra settings in demanding games, but I would like the system to stay reliable and avoid random stutters for several years. I'm considering a prebuilt because I'm nervous about assembling parts incorrectly, though I'm wondering whether choosing the components myself would provide better performance for the money. Should I build it myself or buy a prebuilt, and what parts or specifications should I target within this budget?

With a $1,400 CAD total budget, compare complete builds rather than focusing only on the graphics card. A good target would be 16 GB of RAM at minimum, preferably 32 GB if mods and Minecraft packs are important, a 1 TB SSD, a reputable 600–750 W power supply, and a current midrange CPU/GPU combination. For your games, smooth frametimes and having enough memory will matter more than buying a top-tier graphics card. If a prebuilt has those parts, a warranty may justify paying a little extra; otherwise, selecting the parts yourself is usually the better value.
For the games you listed, you don't need an extremely powerful machine. A sensible midrange desktop with a modern six-core processor, 16–32 GB of RAM, an NVMe SSD, and a dedicated graphics card should handle them comfortably. Building it yourself usually gives you better parts for the price, and the chance of damaging something during a careful first build is quite low. That said, a prebuilt can be worthwhile if it has clearly listed, standard components and a decent power supply. Avoid systems that hide the exact motherboard, PSU, RAM, or storage models, since those are often where manufacturers cut costs.
It should be fine if it has a reasonably recent CPU, dual-channel RAM, an SSD, and a graphics card appropriate for your monitor’s resolution. Check the actual specifications rather than judging by the advertised gaming label, and leave some budget for upgrades later.

Would an inexpensive prebuilt be enough for these games, or could I run into stuttering because the hardware is already outdated?
