Should I Build This Gaming PC Now or Wait Until I Actually Need It?

My gaming laptop recently died, but replacing it immediately isn't essential because I can manage with an integrated-graphics laptop for now. I'm considering a desktop with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE ARGB, Radeon RX 9070 XT, Lian Li Vector V100R case, and a 700W power supply. I would reuse my current 512GB SSD and either buy 2x16GB of DDR5 memory used for $300 or less or start with one 16GB stick and add another later if prices improve. I expect to need a more powerful dedicated computer next fall, but I could potentially wait until late 2027 or early 2028 for newer AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards. Would it make more sense to build now, or wait and upgrade when I genuinely need the performance?

Because the 7800X3D uses the AM5 platform, you need DDR5 memory. One 16GB stick will run in single-channel mode and can hurt performance, so 2x16GB is the better choice. If buying 32GB is too expensive, itโs better to wait or look for a reasonably priced matched kit than to plan around a single stick.

Do not use that Thermaltake Smart 700W unit with this build. Itโs considered a very low-quality power supply and isnโt worth risking expensive components over. Choose a reputable 750Wโ850W model with a strong safety record and an appropriate modern efficiency rating instead.
MellowHarbor47: Thanks for catching that. Iโll replace the power supply with a better budget-friendly model rather than trying to save money there.

If you can comfortably get by without a desktop, waiting is reasonable. A year probably wonโt guarantee a huge price dropโmaybe you save around $100โ$200, but prices could also rise. Since you expect to need the system next fall, start watching for deals now rather than buying purely on speculation.
MellowHarbor47: My bigger concern is having enough GPU performance when I actually need the computer, not just saving money. Iโm wondering whether a 9070 XT would retain enough resale value to sell later and upgrade to a newer high-end card.

MellowHarbor47: Iโd rather stay on AM5 and pay more for DDR5 now than switch platforms and end up needing another CPU, motherboard, and memory upgrade sooner.
