I'm putting together a new personal PC build and can't decide between a 2x8GB DDR5 kit and a single 16GB stick. My budget is limited, especially where I live, and I probably won't be able to upgrade immediately. I may add more memory in a year or two, so I'm trying to choose the option that makes the most sense now without wasting money later.

A 2x8GB kit will usually perform a little better right away because it can run in dual-channel mode. If you don’t expect to upgrade for quite a while, that’s probably the better choice. You can always replace it with a larger kit later, although selling the old memory may be necessary.
A single 16GB stick leaves an empty slot and makes upgrading simpler later, but it will run in single-channel mode until you add a matching module. Also, dual-rank memory isn’t the same thing as dual-channel operation—dual-channel depends on using the motherboard’s memory channels, typically with two sticks.
If 16GB is already going to feel tight for the games and programs you use, it may be worth reconsidering the platform or saving for a larger amount of memory. Heavy memory use can cause the system to rely on the SSD, which is much slower. Otherwise, 2x8GB is the better-performing option now, while 1x16GB only makes more sense if you’re fairly confident you’ll add another 16GB stick soon.
Exactly. Even if a module is dual-rank, that doesn’t provide the same benefit as having two sticks operating across both memory channels.
