I'm looking to replace my RTX 3070 mainly for gaming at 1440p. My system has a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and I enjoy path tracing, although it isn't essential. The RX 9070 XT seems to fit my budget at around $800, but I unexpectedly found a used RTX 4080 listed for about $1,000. Used hardware is usually expensive where I live, so this is one of the better high-end GPU deals I've seen. Is the extra $200 worth paying for the 4080, or would it be smarter to buy the newer card with a warranty?

The 4080 only makes sense if you can test it thoroughly or have a reliable return period. Make sure it runs under load, check temperatures and clock speeds, and inspect the power connector. A used card could work perfectly for years, but it could also fail soon after the return window closes, leaving you out $1,000.
At these prices, I wouldn’t consider the used 4080 a bargain. The 9070 XT is close enough in regular gaming performance, costs less, and comes with a warranty. Unless path tracing and Nvidia’s software features are a major priority, the newer AMD card is the safer buy.
I’d lean toward the new RX 9070 XT. The RTX 4080 is somewhat faster and has stronger ray-tracing performance, upscaling, and frame-generation support, but the difference probably isn’t worth paying more for a several-year-old card with no clear warranty. A new GPU gives you much better peace of mind.
I’m starting to agree. A new RTX 5070 Ti costs about the same as the used 4080 here, and I don’t think DLSS and a small performance increase justify paying another $200.
If you care a lot about path tracing, DLSS, and broad game support for Nvidia features, the 4080 still has advantages. It’s an excellent gaming card, but $1,000 is difficult to justify when newer options are available around the same price and the 9070 XT is $200 cheaper.
It may be worth checking for a used RTX 5070 Ti or a cheaper used 9070 XT before deciding. A 5070 Ti would give you newer Nvidia features without paying full 4080 money, while a used 9070 XT in good condition could offer the best value if the seller and warranty situation are trustworthy.
That’s my concern too. The seller is in another city, although the marketplace does offer fairly straightforward refunds. I’d still want to know how long the protection lasts.
