I'm looking to upgrade from my RTX 3070 primarily for gaming at 1440p. My system has a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and I enjoy path tracing, although it isn't essential. The best option within my budget seems to be a new RX 9070 XT for around $800, but I've also found a used RTX 4080 listed for about $1,000. Used hardware deals are usually poor in my area, so this is one of the better high-end Nvidia prices I've seen. Is the extra $200 worth paying for the RTX 4080, or would the newer card, warranty, and lower price make the RX 9070 XT the smarter choice?

At $1,000, the used RTX 4080 doesn’t sound like a strong bargain. It’s an older card, and the asking price is close to newer alternatives such as a 5070 Ti. I’d compare prices for a used 5070 Ti or even a used 9070 XT first; if those are available for significantly less, they offer a better balance of performance and risk.
The 4080 makes sense only if you can verify that it’s in excellent condition and the seller or marketplace gives you a meaningful return window. It offers better path-tracing performance, DLSS support, and generally stronger ray-tracing features. However, a used GPU can fail shortly after the purchase, and replacing a $1,000 card would be painful. I wouldn’t buy it without seeing it run or having reliable buyer protection.
I’d lean toward the new RX 9070 XT. The RTX 4080 is somewhat faster and has stronger ray-tracing, upscaling, and frame-generation features, but the performance gap is relatively small in many games. Paying $200 more for a several-year-old used card is risky when the newer card includes a warranty. Unless you can thoroughly test the 4080 and confirm the return period, the 9070 XT is the safer value.
That’s where I landed too. A new RTX 5070 Ti is around the same price as the used 4080 in my area, so the older card no longer looks like a particularly good deal. DLSS and a small performance bump aren’t enough for me to justify the extra $200.
If path tracing is a major priority, I’d choose the 4080 because Nvidia’s ray-tracing performance, upscaling, and game support are still better. For conventional 1440p gaming, though, the 9070 XT is close enough that the extra $200 is difficult to justify, especially since it’s new and has a warranty. The choice mostly comes down to whether those Nvidia features matter more to you than reliability and value.
Exactly. A used card can work perfectly for years, but it could also fail after the return period ends. For this price difference, warranty coverage is worth a lot.
