I'm building my first PC and mainly want to play Microsoft Flight Simulator on a monitor and in VR, along with first-person shooters such as Battlefield and Warzone, plus FIFA. I'm comparing a used RTX 4090 priced at $1,250 with a new RTX 5080 listed at $1,400. NVIDIA has announced DLSS 5 support for the RTX 50 series, but there hasn't been clear confirmation that RTX 40-series cards will officially support it. Is the used 4090 the better choice for raw performance and VR, or is the newer 5080 worth choosing for its features and warranty?

The RTX 5080 makes more sense if you specifically want the newer generation, a full warranty, and support for newer rendering features such as DLSS 5. However, those features may not be a major advantage if the performance cost is high, and the 5080 is still weaker than a 4090 in traditional rendering in many games. Also, both cards are probably more GPU power than you need for FIFA and most shooters, although Microsoft Flight Simulator in VR can absolutely justify a very high-end card.
If the RTX 4090 is genuinely working and the seller is trustworthy, it’s the stronger deal. It offers higher raw performance and more VRAM than the RTX 5080, which is especially useful for demanding flight simulation and VR. At $1,250, though, verify the card carefully before paying—check its condition, serial number, benchmark results, temperatures, and whether you can test it in person. That price is unusually low for a legitimate 4090.
The biggest issue isn’t really 4090 versus 5080—it’s whether the listings are legitimate. A used 4090 normally sells for substantially more than $1,250, while a 5080 at $1,400 may also be overpriced depending on the market. If the 4090 passes testing and comes from a reliable seller, I’d choose it for this workload. If you can’t verify it, pay more for the new 5080 and the warranty rather than risking a counterfeit, damaged, or stolen card.
Flight Simulator in VR is the exception here. It can be extremely demanding, so the extra performance and VRAM of the 4090 may be worthwhile if the rest of the system is capable of keeping up.
