Should I Buy DDR5 RAM Now or Wait for Prices to Improve?

I was too young to follow the 2018 and 2020 crypto-related hardware shortages, so I'm wondering whether the current AI-driven hardware demand is better or worse. I'm deciding whether to build now or wait for prices to come down. For the memory specifically, should I buy one 16GB DDR5 stick, even though it costs slightly more, or get a cheaper 2x8GB kit and benefit from dual-channel performance?

There’s no guarantee that hardware will get cheaper soon. Some people expect the AI spending cycle to cool down, while others think demand will remain high, so the practical advice is to buy when you have the money and a genuine need. You also don’t need the newest parts to have a good gaming experience; older platforms or midrange components can offer much better value.

The shortages are different rather than directly comparable. During the crypto period, GPUs could be extremely difficult to find even when you had the money. Now, many parts are available, but memory-heavy components can be priced far above their previous value. If you’re building immediately, prioritize a balanced system and avoid paying premium prices for flagship parts.

For a budget build, go with 2x8GB if 16GB is enough for your use. Dual-channel memory generally performs better, and the kit is cheaper. A single 16GB stick gives you an easier upgrade path, but only if you can later find a compatible module with matching speed, timings, and voltage; mixing memory can otherwise force slower settings or cause stability problems.

If you choose one stick, make sure the motherboard supports the intended capacity and plan to buy the second module sooner rather than assuming any random 16GB stick will match.

The current situation affects more components than the crypto boom did. Crypto mainly caused GPU shortages, while AI demand is also putting pressure on system RAM, VRAM, SSDs, and manufacturing capacity. Nobody can reliably predict when prices will fall, though, so if you need the PC now, buy what fits your budget rather than trying to time the market.

It may improve eventually, but that could take years. Waiting only makes sense if you can comfortably keep using your current system.
