A friend was banned from a particular game for valid reasons and now has two unused SSDs, one 1TB and one 2TB. He replaced his PC while continuing to play that game, so he no longer needs the drives. Buying them would save me enough money to build a better PC, but I'm worried the SSDs might carry a hardware-related ban. I don't play the game he was banned from and don't currently plan to. Could these drives cause problems in other games, especially ones using the same anti-cheat system or publisher platform?

I’d buy them only if the discount is substantial and you’re comfortable with the small possibility of compatibility or ban-related issues. If you ever encounter a problem in a game using the same anti-cheat ecosystem, you may have to replace the drive or contact support. Before purchasing, verify the SSD model, total writes, power-on hours, health percentage, and whether the seller will let you test them.
There is still some uncertainty. Some anti-cheat systems or publishers may use hardware identifiers across multiple games, and companies generally don’t explain exactly how their bans work. A ban connected to a platform or publisher could potentially affect more than the original game, so the risk is low but not completely zero if you later play related titles.
They’re probably fine if you never play the affected game, and using only the SSD usually won’t reproduce the entire hardware fingerprint. Hardware bans often use several components together, such as the motherboard, CPU, GPU, and storage, rather than treating one drive as a complete banned computer. The bigger concern is the drives’ age and health, so check their SMART data and remaining endurance before buying.
Formatting the SSDs won’t remove hardware identifiers. A quick or full format only changes the data and filesystem; the drive’s firmware-level serial information remains. That said, a drive serial by itself usually isn’t enough to identify an entire banned PC, so the SSDs should not automatically transfer the ban.
