I'm replacing my 27-inch 1080p IPS monitor, which runs at 165Hz. I found an affordable 4K display for about $240, but it only supports 60Hz, and I'm worried that the sharper image won't compensate for dropping from 165Hz to 60Hz. How low can the refresh rate reasonably go before 4K becomes worthwhile? Would a 1440p monitor with a much higher refresh rate be the better choice at a similar price? I'd prefer not to spend too much. My system has a Ryzen 7 7700X, an Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti, and 32GB of RAM.

I’d choose 1440p at 120Hz or higher over 4K at 60Hz, especially since you’re used to 165Hz. Going back to 60Hz is noticeable not only in games, but also when scrolling and using the desktop. 1440p is a substantial sharpness improvement over 1080p while being much easier for the RTX 4060 Ti to drive than 4K. A 1440p high-refresh monitor should also be reasonably affordable.
A 4K monitor can still be useful if you prioritize desktop work, text clarity, and slower-paced games. You can also run games at 1080p on a 4K panel with clean 4:1 scaling, then switch back to native 4K for browsing or lighter titles. However, for a general-purpose gaming upgrade, 1440p at 144Hz or 165Hz is the safer value choice. I’d only pick 4K60 if sharpness matters much more to you than motion smoothness.
Your RTX 4060 Ti can handle 1440p, although you may need to adjust settings in newer or more demanding games. Using DLSS, lowering a few effects, and avoiding maximum texture settings when VRAM is tight should help. For competitive games, it should have no trouble taking advantage of a high-refresh 1440p display. 4K is a much heavier workload, so 4K at 120Hz or above generally costs more.
The 8GB memory isn’t ideal for every game at 1440p, but it doesn’t make 1440p unusable. It’s still a more balanced match than 4K for this graphics card.
That makes sense. I was mainly concerned that the 4060 Ti’s 8GB of VRAM might make 1440p gaming difficult.
