Should I choose 2×8GB DDR5-5600 or 1×16GB DDR5-6000 for my first PC build?

I'm putting together my first gaming PC with a Ryzen 5 7600 and an RTX 5070, but I'm unsure which memory option makes the most sense for my budget. I can currently afford one 16GB DDR5-6000 stick, though I may be able to find a 2×8GB DDR5-5600 kit for significantly less. Another possibility is buying a single 16GB DDR5-5600 stick and adding more memory later. How much performance would I lose by choosing 5600 instead of 6000, and is dual-channel memory more important than the higher speed?

I’d avoid buying one stick if possible. A single 16GB stick will work, but it can reduce gaming performance compared with two matched sticks. If you buy 2×8GB now, you could later replace them with a 2×16GB kit when you need 32GB, rather than mixing different kits.

For a Ryzen 5 7600, DDR5-6000 is a nice target, but it isn’t mandatory. Prioritize capacity and two matched sticks over a small speed increase. If you can stretch to 2×16GB DDR5-6000 without sacrificing other important parts, that would be the best long-term option; otherwise, 2×8GB DDR5-5600 is a reasonable budget choice.

The difference between DDR5-5600 and DDR5-6000 usually isn’t very noticeable, especially compared with the difference between running one stick and two sticks. If those are your only choices, 2×8GB DDR5-5600 will generally perform better than a single 16GB stick because it runs in dual channel. Just buy a matched kit from a reputable brand.

That makes sense. I was focused on getting 6000 because I assumed the speed difference would be much larger.
