I'm fairly new to PC gaming and upgrading from a Radeon VII with 16GB of VRAM to an RTX 4090 paired with a Ryzen 7 X3D processor and 32GB of DDR5 memory. I mainly play single-player games such as Red Dead Redemption 2, along with competitive games like Counter-Strike 2. Would a 4K OLED monitor be worth the extra cost with this hardware, or would a 1440p OLED with a higher refresh rate be the better choice?

The ideal resolution depends a lot on the screen size. At 27 inches, 1440p usually makes more sense, especially if you want very high refresh rates for competitive games. At 32 inches or larger, 4K is a better fit, and an RTX 4090 has enough performance for demanding games at high settings. Upscaling can also help maintain smooth frame rates.
A large 4K OLED can be especially enjoyable if you play from a couch or use a big-screen setup rather than sitting close to a desk. For desk gaming, though, screen size, viewing distance, refresh rate, and whether you prioritize competitive performance may matter more than resolution alone.
4K can look excellent, but it may be more than you need if competitive gaming and maximum frame rates are priorities. A 1440p OLED with a high refresh rate is a strong all-around option, and an ultrawide could also be worth considering if you prefer a more immersive setup.
For story-driven games, I’d absolutely consider 4K OLED if the display is 32 inches or larger. Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 look incredible with the contrast, colors, and clarity of OLED, and the 4090 is powerful enough to make good use of it.
The difference between 1440p and 4K is still very noticeable to me. I upgraded from a 1440p ultrawide OLED to a 4K OLED and the image improvement was substantial.
