I don't need to take the computer anywhere, and I'm not planning to play especially demanding games. My main priorities are getting strong performance and having the system last for many years. Would a desktop be the better choice, or is there still a good reason to consider a laptop?

Unless you have a specific need to carry it around, I’d go with a desktop. It will provide better value, cooling, upgrade options, and repairability. You can still stream the display to another room or connect it to a television if you want occasional flexibility.
A desktop is the clear choice here. You’ll generally get more performance for the money, better cooling, and quieter operation. When something eventually fails or becomes outdated, you can replace individual parts instead of replacing the entire computer.
Desktops are also much easier to upgrade and repair. You can improve the graphics card, storage, memory, or other components over time, so the system can stay useful for much longer. A laptop’s main advantage is portability, so it doesn’t offer much benefit if you’ll always use it in one place.
A laptop can still make sense if you care about low power usage, have very limited space, or might unexpectedly need to work in different rooms. Mini PCs are another option if you want something compact, but for maximum performance and long-term flexibility, a standard desktop is the safest pick.

Thanks, that clears things up. I hadn’t really considered how much easier it would be to upgrade and repair a desktop.
