Should I Choose a Used RTX 4090 or a New RTX 5080 for Gaming and VR?

I'm building my first PC, mainly for Microsoft Flight Simulator on a monitor and in VR, along with first-person shooters such as Battlefield and Warzone, plus FIFA. I'm deciding between a used RTX 4090 priced at $1,250 and a new RTX 5080 costing $1,400. My main concern is whether newer features such as DLSS 5 will remain limited to the 50-series, since there has not been clear confirmation about future support for RTX 40-series cards. Assuming both listings are legitimate, which GPU would make more sense for my needs?

For Flight Simulator in VR, high-end GPU power can be useful, so these cards arenโ€™t necessarily excessive for your use case. The 4090 is generally faster and has more VRAM, while the 5080 gives you newer hardware and possible future feature support. I wouldnโ€™t pay extra for DLSS 5 alone until its real-world benefit and hardware support are clearer.

SilverWalrus6: VR Flight Simulator can be much more demanding than standard monitor gaming, so the extra performance from the 4090 could matter there.

NeonBirch31: Thatโ€™s fair, although newer features may not be especially useful if enabling them causes a large performance drop. Iโ€™d prioritize native performance and image quality over an advertised feature until reviews show otherwise.

Before sending any money, test the 4090 in person if possible. Check its serial number, inspect the cooler and power connector, run a demanding benchmark, and confirm temperatures and stability. A price that far below typical market value is a warning sign, so the deal is only attractive if the card is authentic and works properly.

The RTX 5080 is the safer pick if having the newest generation and access to newer features is your priority. However, the price you listed seems unusually high for a 5080, while a legitimate 4090 at $1,250 would be unusually cheap. Iโ€™d compare current prices carefully before deciding.

If the RTX 4090 is genuine and in good condition, it looks like the stronger choice. It offers more raw performance and VRAM while costing less than the 5080 in this comparison. The biggest issue is verifying that the used card is legitimate, functional, and not being sold through a scam listing.
