I'm in nursing school and my Dell XPS has started having problems after about a year and a half, including overheating, freezing, screen glitches, and occasionally turning on to a black display. I already have a desktop at home, and many students in my program use iPads.
I need a portable device that can handle several things at once, such as PowerPoint, class notes, online textbooks, and occasional PDF files. I also write papers and make presentations once or twice each semester. I'm considering an iPad Air, a MacBook Air, or another Dell or HP laptop, but I'm hesitant to spend a lot on another laptop after having so many issues with this one. I've never dropped it and always keep it in a case, so I'm not sure whether the problems are from dust, overheating, or not shutting it down often enough.
Since I have a desktop at home, would an iPad Air be enough for school, or would I be better off buying another laptop that can handle regular multitasking and last several years?

An iPad can be great for reading, handwritten notes, and portability, but it may feel limiting for writing papers, managing files, and creating presentations. Since you already own a desktop, it could work as a companion device, but a MacBook Air would be more flexible as your only portable computer. Refurbished Macs can also be worth considering if they come with a good warranty; aim for 16 GB of memory and enough storage for school files.
A MacBook Air sounds like the best fit, especially since you already have a desktop for anything more demanding. For multitasking and better long-term use, I’d choose a model with at least 16 GB of memory rather than the base 8 GB version. It should handle notes, textbooks, presentations, and papers comfortably.
Before replacing the Dell, it may be worth having the overheating checked. Dust or lint can block the vents, the internal fan may be failing, or the thermal paste may need replacement. A cooling pad can help a little, but it won’t solve a bad fan or clogged airflow. If you do replace it, buying a new laptop with plenty of memory and at least 512 GB of storage is safer than buying an older used laptop.
