I'm building my first PC and have narrowed it down to two options: one system with a GeForce RTX 5050 and 16GB of DDR4 memory, or another with an RTX 2060 and 32GB of DDR5 memory. Which setup would give me better gaming performance and a better upgrade path? The CPUs and prices may also affect the decision, so I'm open to considering those factors.

The DDR5 system is more attractive for future upgrades because the newer platform should have a longer useful lifespan. However, 32GB of RAM alone won’t make up for the RTX 2060’s weaker gaming performance, so I’d compare the CPUs, motherboard, power supply, storage, and prices before deciding.
DDR4 is still perfectly adequate for gaming. Unless the DDR5 machine has a significantly better processor or a much lower price, the RTX 5050 setup is probably the better-performing choice. Also check the exact CPU models, since that could easily change the recommendation.
Honestly, I’d consider a third option instead of buying either one new. A used system with a solid CPU and motherboard combination, 32GB of memory, and a used RTX 3060 or RTX 3070 could offer much better value. A reasonably priced RTX 4070 would be even better if your budget allows.
Between these two choices, I’d lean toward the RTX 5050. The difference between DDR4 and DDR5 usually has a much smaller effect on gaming performance than the graphics card, and the newer GPU should generally be the stronger choice. Just make sure the 5050 system isn’t heavily overpriced.
Memory speed can matter somewhat depending on the processor, but even then the difference is usually modest compared with moving from an RTX 2060 to a newer graphics card.
